Human Composting

Human Composting, also known as Soil Transformation or Terramation is the transformation of human remains into soil.

The body is gently washed, wrapped in a biodegradable shroud and placed on a bed of organic matter including mulch, wood chips, straw and wildflowers. Careful carefully balanced microbes, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and water are added.

The vessel is rotated and the temperature is kept above 135 degrees for 45 days.

Each process produces approximately one cubic yard of soil which can be used to restore forests, replenish ecosystems destroyed by wildfires and nourish gardens.

When your loved-one dies, Sacred Crossings will transfer to our care facility where we will make arrangements for the Terramation process.  Families can choose how much of the soil they would like returned and how much will be donated to local forests or wildfire areas.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN CHOOSING HUMAN COMPOSTING – ‘TERRAMATION’

We work directly with families either by phone or Zoom and all of our paperwork is e-mailed and fillable online. Alternatively, we can make an appointment in the privacy of your own home to offer comfort and support and help you complete the paperwork.

Once your loved-one is in our care, expect the composting process to begin within eight to ten days.  The complete process may take up to two months.

The cost for Human Composting varies between $4500 – $6000 depending on the facility that is available at the time of need.

CREMATION, TERRAMATION or AQUAMATION VS. BURIAL IN LOS ANGELES

A conventional burial in California requires purchase and maintenance of land, a hardwood casket, concrete burial vault and headstone, whereas fire cremation, aquamation or terramation use only fuel, organic matter and a biodegradable urn.
