Water Cremation
Water Cremation, also known as Bio-Cremation or Alkaline Hydrolysis is a water-based alternative to fire cremation.

The body is placed in a stainless steel container filled with water and potassium hydroxide (Lye) and heated to 320 degrees Fahrenheit. The process is agitated and pressurized until the remains are reduced to sterile liquid and bone fragments.
The water is released into a water treatment system and the bone fragments are processed into a fine powder, placed in a temporary urn and returned to the family. These ‘ashes’ look very similar to fire cremation ashes and can be scattered, mixed with soil and used as fertilizer or buried.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN CHOOSING WATER CREMATION – ‘AQUAMATION’
Our trained Sacred Crossing Guides work directly with families either by phone, Zoom or in-person in your home. All of our paperwork is e-mailed and fillable online.
The entire process from time of death to return of water cremation ashess usually takes between 7 – 10 days.
Sacred Crossings transfers your loved-one to our care facility where we file the death certificate and permit and make arrangements for the cremation process with a local service provider. Ashes can either be returned to you or you may pick up from our West LA office.

CREMATION, TERRAMATION or AQUAMATION VS. BURIAL IN LOS ANGELES
A conventional burial in California requires purchase and maintenance of land, a hardwood casket, concrete burial vault and headstone, whereas fire cremation, aquamation or terramation use only fuel, organic matter and a biodegradable urn.
